The RogLab Mood Lamp Challenge

Can you design and build your own RogLab Mood Lamp (a stunning tabletop LED lamp with programmable light patterns) in just a few hours? YES, YOU CAN! Join us at the workshop on Friday, November 30.

RogLab is a place where you can make (almost) anything. In this practical hands-on workshop, you have the opportunity to learn how using RogLab and other Fab Labs are changing the way we create.

The workshop will be mentored by Michael Nique, co-founder of the Fab Lab Nürnberg and Amoonic – amazing jewelry. Michael is an expert in the application of digital fabrication technology and e-commerce. The workshop will also be mentored by Markus Edgar Hormeß, co-founder of Fab Lab Nürnberg and a service innovation consultant with WorkPlayExperience. Markus is also responsible for the Open Education project at the Open Source Business Foundation.

What can you expect?

  • Lab Basics: Participants will learn the basics about available production technologies that can be found in the lab: CNC milling, vinyl cutting, 3D printing, and electronics.
  • If you can sketch it, you can make it: Using easy-to-use software, these machines can now literally be worked by anyone: from six-year-old school children to the silver generation, from artists and designers to engineers. Anyone with an idea will be enabled to create first tangible prototypes in only a couple of hours.
What do these options mean for people with an idea? How can I sketch? You get a brief overview of entry level and advanced sketching tools and learn how to use them.
  • Experience what YOU can do: In this mainly hands-on workshop, the participants receive a challenge to design and create a first working prototype of their own RogLab Mood Lamp (a stunning tabletop LED lamp with programmable light patterns). Experience how you can get from your idea to a real product or art piece in only a couple of hours using the machines and electronics in the room.

09:00 – 10:00       Lab Basics

RogLab provides equipment for vinyl cutting, a CNC milling machine, 3D printing and the programming of microelectronics. The potential of each machine is explained.

10:00 – 10:30        Briefing for the RogLab Mood Lamp Challenge

Get to know the details on the challenge for the day and find a team partner. You are    introduced to    possible materials and the LED module.

10:30 – 11:45       Design and prototyping – iteration 01

In your teams, you create first design ideas and learn how to create quick-and-dirty prototypes.

11:45 – 12:00        Presentation of first design ideas
12:00 – 13:00        LUNCH
13:00 – 15:30        Design and prototyping - further iterations

Based on your first prototypes, you start to build your final designs using the machines from the lab. Also, you set up the LED module and create appropriate light patterns.

15:30                     Presentation of final results and reflections

16:00                     Official end of the workshop

16:00 - 18:00         (Optional) Extension time
