In cooperation with  KUD Trivia and its Socialdress project, RogLab would like to invite you to the workshop Socialdress – Power Dress, which will take place on Thursday, December 20th, between 4 pm and 7 pm. At the workshop, we will use a machine to embroider your clothes with words, slogans, symbols and signs that have special power meanings for you.

What do symbols of power represent to the modern man? Symbols of power can be represented by words, slogans, by widespread and well-known images, such as yin-yang, star, mandalas, religious symbols, trademarks, etc. Pop culture is full of images with a high energy charge. The young, whose imagination is still firmly rooted in the world of cartoons and comics, find that the symbols of their almighty heroes are full of power. Symbols of power can also be images that have special meaning only to a certain individual.

Symbolic power can be held by signs that denote ownership (e.g. family crest, initials of personal names) or belonging to another person, such as, for instance, a heart pierced by an arrow, which used to be an extremely popular tattoo. So why should we not “tattoo” our clothes, which function as our second skin?

The project Socialdress - Power Dress consists of two parts: introductory and continuing workshop. Attending the introductory workshop is not a condition for attending the continuing workshop.

1. Introductory Workshop
Thursday, December 20th, between 4 pm and 7 pm

The workshop is primarily concieved for learning about and trying out the possibilities of embroidery machine. At the workshop participants will be able to embroider your own clothes with words, slogans or to use images which are included in the machine software. Bring along to the workshop an article of clothing (or more) onto which you wish to embroider your chosen motif. Due to the technical demands of machine embroidery, the clothing should be woven and not knitted. The participants can bring trousers, skirts, blouses, shirts, jackets, scarves, handkerchiefs, etc. If you are in doubt as regards the motif or the piece of clothing you want to bring, do not hesitate to consult with us. At the end of the workshop, the participants will take their creations home.

The result of the workshop will be “empowered” clothes or fashion accessories with the Socialdress art trademark, which will have a special meaning for the participants. The descriptions and explanations of the selected symbols and the final products will be documented.

The workshop will last 3 hours. It will be led by Marija Mojca Pungerčar, the author of the Socialdress project, who will be assisted by the RogLab team.

The participation fee for the workshop is 10 euros. This fee can be settled at the workshop.

More on the Socialdress project:
The expression “social dress” marks clothes that function in the sense of uniting a community. Socialdress workshops spread knowledge on creating clothes and at the same time deepen the knowledge about the consequences of globalization for the domestic textile industry and the disappearance of handcraft knowledge and skills. Communication – the exchange of stories and experience – represents an important part of these workshops. Through this, the Socialdress trademark is created and spread. Socialdress clothes cannot be bought in shops, they can only be made.

KUD Trivia and its project Socialdress is a RogLab programme partner. The Socialdress project is partially financed by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia.
