Embroider your own monogram

03.01.2013

You are invited to attend children’s embroidery workshop. Saturday, January 5th, between 11 am and 12:30 pm.

You have certainly an embroidered handkerchief that used to belong to one of your ancestors tucked away somewhere. Not so long ago, diligent housekeepers used to embroider all bed linen, kitchen cloths and towels with monograms, i.e. acronyms/a code/a sign/ made from one, two or more intertwining letters that marked the owner. In RogLab, your child can learn basic embroidery and sewing techniques through the use of new technologies.

Through a modern and creative approach developed by the two young mentors – Katja and Tjaša – your child will learn about embroidery, see various examples of embroidery and learn about the various embroidery techniques.

They will also get acquainted with the concept of the monogram, discover how it emerged and learn how to create their own monogram from their names. They will create a sketch for a handkerchief or scarf, write their name and create a monogram with the help of the mentors, tailor a product, hem it and embroider it with a digital embroidery machine.

Children will embroider their monograms on handkerchiefs, scarves or napkins that they will create at the workshop and for which they will receive all the necessary materials. If you wish to mark your favourite clothing garment, you are welcome to bring it with you – however, be sure to verify with the mentors whether the material is suitable for the embroidery machine when registering.

The mentors Katja Richter and Tjaša Žgalin are postgraduate students at the Chair of Textile and Fashion Design at the Faculty of Natural Science and Engineering, University of Ljubljana, in cooperation with which this workshop has been prepared.
